How to adjust the water hardness of your Jura D4 machine?

Written By Floriane Mailleux, last update on

You're wondering why we insist so much on adjusting the water hardness of your machine?

If the water hardness is not properly configured, your machine will remain on the pre-set setting. What will happen next?

  • Either you are very lucky and the recorded hardness matches your water hardness.
  • Or the recorded hardness is too low: your machine will prompt you to change the filter too late. As a result, the accumulated limescale will damage your machine.
  • Or the recorded hardness is too high: your machine will prompt you to replace the filter excessively. As a result, you will be replacing filters that don't actually need to be replaced.

What do you need for this procedure?

  • The tap water you will use to fill the water tank of your machine.
  • The visual representation of the symbols (to better understand the explanations) is as follows:

  • The Aquadur test strip provided with your machine.

How to determine the hardness of your water?

Follow these steps to determine the hardness of your water:

  1. Hold the test strip briefly (1 second) under the tap water.
  2. Shake it.
  3. Wait for approximately 1 minute.
  4. Read the water hardness level by comparing the color of the Aquadur test strip with the provided description on the packaging.

How to enter the information into your machine? (During the initial setup)

  1. Fill the bean container.
  2. Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet.
  3. Press the On/Off button to turn on the machine. The "coffee" symbol will light up.
  4. Touch the "coffee" symbol: the coffee symbol and the coffee intensity symbols will light up.

/!\ The intensity symbols correspond to the water hardness level:

                                                                                                            1 grain = 1-15 °dH

                                                                                                            2 grains = 16-53 °dH

                                                                                                            3 grains = 24-30 °dH

       5. Select your water hardness by touching the appropriate intensity symbol.

       6. Touch the coffee symbol to confirm the setting.

       7. Continue with the initial setup procedure on page 13 of the manual.

How to enter the information into your machine?

If the machine has already been set up but you need to adjust the water hardness, follow these steps:

  1. Touch and hold the "Double product 2X" symbol for about 2 seconds.
  2. Four symbols will light up strongly: "X2", "espresso", "coffee", "machine cleaning", and "descaling".
  3. Touch the "coffee" symbol (the large coffee).
  4. Select your water hardness by touching the corresponding intensity symbol.

/!\ The intensity symbols correspond to the water hardness level:

                                                                                                                    1 grain = 1-15 °dH

                                                                                                                    2 grains = 16-53 °dH

                                                                                                                    3 grains = 24-30 °dH

        5. Touch the coffee symbol to confirm the setting.
